How to watch movies together online.

By the Kuvacult team · Published September 21, 2026

There are two ways to watch a movie with friends who aren’t in the room: everyone presses play on their own copy in sync, or one person shares their screen. Here is how each works, and how to do it in a Kuvacult séance.

Option 1: sync your streams

Browser extensions such as Teleparty keep everyone’s playback in sync on supported streaming services, with a chat on the side. It looks great because each person streams in full quality, but everyone needs their own subscription to the same service, and it only works for films on those services.

Option 2: share one screen

One person plays the film and shares their screen, so only the host needs a copy. This works for anything you own, including files on your own computer. General apps like Discord can do this, but they aren’t built around movie night: there is nowhere to plan what to watch or log it afterwards.

How to watch together in Kuvacult

Kuvacult’s séance is a screen-sharing watch room built into the same app where your group keeps its shared watchlist and diary.

1Open the Ritual tab and press Begin séance. The candle lights to show your room is live.
2Your friends join the séance from their own computers.
3Share your screen and play the film. Screen share is in beta at up to 30fps.
4When the credits roll, everyone logs and rates it in their diary.

Can’t agree on the film first? Run Veto Sacrifice on your shared watchlist, or try the movie night picker in your browser. Kuvacult never hosts or stores the files you share.

Questions

How can I watch a movie with friends online for free?

Use a free screen-sharing tool. In Kuvacult, open a séance, invite your friends and share your screen. If everyone has the same streaming service, a sync extension also works.

Does everyone need the same streaming subscription?

With sync extensions, yes, because each person streams on their own account. With screen sharing, only the host needs to have the film.

Does Kuvacult host or upload my movie?

No. A séance shares your screen with friends in the room. Kuvacult never hosts or stores your files.

Can I watch together on iPhone or Android?

Kuvacult is on Windows for now. iPhone and Android versions are planned; you can join the waitlist to help decide which comes first.
